Friends & Neighbors,
This past week my husband and I took the kids to see snow for the first time and try skiing in Switzerland. So rather than rolling around Naples reviewing the new spots, I ate more fondue than I care to recall.
One cuisine that both the Swiss and Naples locals embrace wholeheartedly is Italian. This week, Iām giving readers our essential Italian reading list to remind you of some of the best Italian that Naples has to offer as you plan the week ahead.
There are a lot of great events going on this week, so this issue also features our nine favorites. From watercolors to Rod Stewart, thereās no shortage of things to do!
Weāre also excited to present the results of our āOverrated or Worth the Hypeā reader poll! This poll elicited some intense debate and laugh-out-loud commentary. I wanted to republish some of the best feedback we received (and you guys love to be honest, which I like)!
As always, if you have any feedback on this issue or ideas for another issue, please email me at [email protected].
In the meantime, Iām off to fight the jet lag and bring you a fresh new review next week.
Thanks for reading,

Overrated or Worth the Hype? Your Vote & Your Voice!
I hoped that our āOverrated or Worth the Hypeā poll would generate plenty of audience participation and feedbackāand you didnāt disappoint! Below, youāll find the results for each restaurant along with some of the best (and most honest) comments you shared. I read every single comment, so if youād like to add your voice to the mix, feel free to email me at [email protected].
For the record, Iāve had excellent meals at Sails, Nosh, The Turtle Club, and Campielloās. Out of these, Nosh is the one I least mind paying forāquality for the price is key. I also feel that Campielloās was a lot better over 10 years ago, when it was arguably the most āauthenticā downtown Italian restaurant, though the Italian food scene as a whole has improved since then. (You can read my sentimental review of the Turtle Club in our first issue here.)
The biggest takeaway from this poll? Youāve finally pushed me to check out Hyde & Chic. Iāve heard so many things about that restaurant and read countless reviewsāitās high time I give it a try!
Sails: Overpriced and Overwrought
Despite many positive comments, most of you feel Sails is overpriced and overwrought overall.
Your Comments:
ā¢ āStuffy atmosphere, overpriced entrees, staff not treated with respectā¦why would anyone want to support them?ā ā J
ā¢ āOne of the best dining experiences in Naples.ā ā C.B.
ā¢ āFood is very good but prices ridiculously high.ā ā B
ā¢ āIndifference is the only way to describe the service vibe.ā ā P.B.
ā¢ āOn several visits, we found the food mediocre at best, the service slow and amateurish, and the atmosphere pretentious.ā ā E.W.
Nosh on Naples Bay: Creative and Elevated
Nosh offers a fine dining experience off Fifth Avenue thatās definitely worth tryingāespecially for its excellent Happy Hour.
Your Comments:
ā¢ āOne of our favorite restaurants! Delicious food, kind and professional waiters, love and thought put into all the dishes, and you can taste it. Worth the trip from anywhereānever been disappointed except when we couldnāt get a reservation!ā ā Jodie
ā¢ āWe have enjoyed our visits; the food overall was very good.ā ā E.W.
ā¢ āThe menu is just not worth the price.ā ā M.J.
The Turtle Club: Past Its Prime (Close Vote)
This beachside institution is a Naples must-see for its history, though many of you agree itās a bit pricey nowadays.
Your Comments:
ā¢ āI will go for the Turtle bread alone!ā ā M.M.
ā¢ āBetter, newer places to dine.ā ā M.P.
ā¢ āNever disappoints.ā ā M.J.
ā¢ āLove any restaurant on the beach. We do not have enough of them.ā ā C.W.
Campielloās: Timeless Italian
Many of you feel Campielloās, while still charming, isnāt quite what it used to beābetter a decade (or more) ago.
Your Comments:
ā¢ āA great restaurant 5 years ago that is resting on its laurels.ā ā R.W.
ā¢ āNot what it was, outdated compared to other great Italian restaurants.ā ā F.K.
ā¢ āAnyone who voted āTourist Trapā clearly hasn't had their radiatori!ā ā M.M.
ā¢ āFun spot, but food is uninspired.ā ā M.T.
ā¢ āItās a tourist trap but food is good. Problem is getting reservations.ā ā B.M.
ā¢ āWe go there with family and guests alike! The bruschetta is the best in town!ā ā M.J.
ā¢ āRidiculously overpriced, not worth it.ā ā L.L.
ā¢ āAcoustics horrible, service mediocre.ā ā P.B.
ā¢ āHigh quality food and great for people watching.ā ā D.D.
Hyde & Chic: Tied Between Creative Chef/Bold Flavors and Overhyped
Hyde & Chic has received mixed reviews, with some of you impressed by the chefās creativity while others felt the flavors were overhyped.
Your Comments:
ā¢ āNo, I did not vote bold flavorsā¦I voted overhyped! And WOW is it ever! The food was only averageā¦and it was ALL beefā¦ the fish came in unacceptable. I was stuck with every course being beef. The wine pairings were weakāobviously, the person picking them only knows the words āredā and āwhiteā! The choices were poor. I would never go backā¦ such a disappointment!ā ā B.C.
ā¢ āI keep hearing that you need a lot of time if you dine here.ā ā D.D.
